EMPOWER YOURSELF - BY FIRST STOPPING TO THINK

What’s poisoning civil society? One of the biggest contributors to the growing epidemic of division and violence in the world is the tendency of people to disrespect, belittle, shame, or vilify anyone who disagrees with them – even to accuse them of being motivated by ill will, hatred, and bigotry – when the other person often just has a difference of opinion or just sees the world differently. Often, those that accuse others of hatred and bigotry are the perpetrators of the hatred and bigotry.

What spreads it? This social disease of division can become especially toxic when combined with lies or half-truths and spread through social or mass media by those who stir up anger, contention, and contempt to further their own selfish interests (or simply to vent or lash out) .

The tragedy of innocent ingestion. Internet algorithms can contribute to toxicity and make recovery less likely. They record your internet activity and then feed you a diet of internet content that is designed to hold you captive and get as many clicks as possible – a diet not based on what is best for you or the world, but on what is best for business interests. The more you click on any kind of content, the more of that content you will be fed (whether it’s true or not). It’s not a balanced diet.

WHAT CAN I DO?

Protect yourself from the poison.

You are of great value. Be careful not to allow yourself to catch the disease, spread it, be riled and manipulated, or be cankered. Don’t stoop to tactics that are hateful, dishonest, or otherwise beneath the dignity of your humanity.

Check the facts. As you encounter divisive or polarized content online, stop and ask yourself these questions.  Who are the creators behind this content?  What might their motivation be? What other information or viewpoints should I consider?

Be part of the cure – not the disease.

Maintain your self-respect and integrity. Use the internet as a force to help heal the world.

Be a good human.

Set an example. Think about and embrace standards that anchor and enhance the dignity of your own humanity – standards such as:

Respect Freedom of Belief/ Opinion

Lack of respect for freedom of belief is the main marker for division and violence in a society. Cherish your own freedom of belief. Respect and protect it for others.

Listen to Understand & Learn

Listening just to refute is not “listening”. Listen to understand. Listen with respect and humility. It’s powerful! It both increases your power to make a difference and leads to better solutions for all.

Be Civil & Warm-Hearted

You can be passionate about your position without being disrespectful or mean. “Answer contempt with warm-heartedness…Having a sense of caring create(s) a positive atmosphere.” – Dalai Lama XIV

LIVE YOUR PIECE

Whether you think about it or not

Though you are not solely responsible for world peace,
You are responsible for your piece/peace.™
(Your piece of world peace and your own inner peace)

Accept full responsibility for both. Personalize the above statement. Inscribe it in your heart and mind. Make it part of your peace mindset. Work on living it better every day.

Don’t just blame, shame, and complain. Start with an honest self-assessment of what you can do better. Blaming can make you unjustifiably feel justified and keep you from personal growth and making a more positive contribution.

Do your part. If everyone lived the basic standards of civility in Part 1 and refused to stoop beneath the dignity of their own humanity, the world would be a much better place.

WHAT CAN I DO?

3 action basics.

3 action basics.

Launch

Begin each day with the personal pledge Today I will more fully live my piece of peace in my home, workplace, school, and wherever.  Start by respecting freedom of opinion, listening to understand, and being civil and warm-hearted.

One a Day

Each morning (or week) choose just one other thing you will do to build peace – a specific act of kindness, forgiveness, reconciliation, reaching across the aisle to make a new friend, or whatever. Then do it.

Stay Aware

Keep your antenna up. Other opportunities to build peace will come naturally during the day –opportunities to listen, love, and lift. Embrace them.

SHARE & ENGAGE

Wouldn’t it be great if we could inscribe the statement:

“Though I am not solely responsible for world peace,
I am responsible for my piece/peace” ™

into the hearts and minds of every person on the planet – or at least as many as possible in all sectors of society and at all levels of leadership? Working together we can – and in so doing expand our own individual impact exponentially.

“PEACE IS NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT – IT REQUIRES THE EFFORTS OF ALL.”

Past RI President Charles “Chuck” Keller
